“Don’t touch anything” means that you are aware of what is going on inside, but you are not getting involved in it, not identifying, resisting or attempting to control thoughts and emotions.
As awareness, you can observe your inner state, no matter how loud or turbulent it may be – without getting involved, without “touching” anything. See what happens as this takes place inside you.
Being present in the moment does not necessarily mean that your mind will not be producing thoughts or emotions. The only thing that matters is that you can be here as a witness of them. Have a sense that you are the awareness in which they arise.
There may be residual energy in the mind, producing thoughts and self-concepts. Be at a place of this not mattering so much. Thoughts are none of your business, just be a witness. Let them come and go as they please. Take your attention inward into the silence that is always here. With this attitude the mind will naturally quieten by itself.
"The one who hears the voice of the mind but continues to look from and as the source of being, transcends the limited mind and becomes ever-free. Such a one is called a Buddha, Christ-consciousness, Shiva-being."
Even if the mind is still moving – this does not matter, stay as the awareness only. The awareness does not prefer some thoughts to other thoughts, it does not prefer silence to noise – it is just pure awareness. That is what you are.
Don’t expect to have absolutely no thought or no reaction to external events, don’t let this be your aim, because this will just be another desire of the mind, which itself cannot fulfill. Eventually or immediately you may find far more stillness and nonreactivity within you, but it will be a result of not reacting to your inner state, and just being the awareness of it.
“Look but don’t touch” means that you are aware of what is going on inside, but you are not getting involved in it, not identifying, resisting or attempting to control thoughts and emotions.
You are already this awareness, and the whole game of “self-realisation” is just finding this out for yourself. You can witness everything, “inside” and “outside”.
The personal sense of self arises in your awareness. You can be aware of this - but you do not have to “touch” it. Just see that it is there, only as an image or a thought. It may feel dense or full of energy – but ultimately it is unreal, ephemeral. Realise that you are the awareness of this.
