What is Beyond Death?

Question:

Hi Adam,

Firstly I'd like to thank you for this site. It's been a huge help to me. You have a way of writing that makes things seem so clear and obvious.

My question for you is fairly simple, and I apologize if you have answered it elsewhere.

You talk about awareness being what we are. What I want to know is, is awareness eternal? That is, once the physical body dies, does awareness remain?

Thank you again, so much.

Response:

Hello Genevieve,

Thanks for your message, I’m glad the site has been useful for you.

I keep coming back to your question to give you an answer, but nothing I write has any power. I feel as if I don’t have an answer for you. The typical “spiritual response” is yes, unborn awareness is eternal, deathless. It has no form so cannot die. But in another sense, it is as if your question does not make sense. For what is eternal, in that there is no time, the idea of death does not come into it. So if you ask something eternal if it will be around later, when something else happens, it’s like it doesn’t make sense. It is here, always, and that’s all there is. I don’t even understand what we mean by death, I feel as if I can’t give you a solid answer.

Even calling it “awareness” doesn’t seem true. It seems like almost a cheap word for it.

So I suppose the answer is “yes”, but just giving you that written response, I feel, will do nothing for you. It is just another concept.

But anyway, thank you for getting in touch, and I wish you a happy new year.

Adam

….a more helpful response I could give you, perhaps, is that the apparent events of birth and death must take place within something. There must be some kind of space or substratum in which they happen…

Thank you NEW

Hi Adam,

Thanks so much answering my question. I really appreciate you not just giving me the usual sort of expected 'spiritual' answer actually.

You're right in that your answer didn't have any power for me on the level of the mind. However, I did feel your answer a lot more in my 'gut' if that makes sense. I've only just recently begun to comprehend the concept of there just being eternal awareness, and that time is just a mind construct. Its hard to write without making it sound like a superficial understanding, but just know that I felt it :)

Thank you very much for getting back to me! I really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Gen
