Can you give tips on how to help me clear my mind? I’ve recently taken on a job that has the most responsibility I’ve handled, and it’s been hard to stop thinking about work when I’m not at work. I’m suffering from burn-out, mental ,and physical fatigue. I spent much time learning my new job outside of work hours. There was little training so I learned most things alone. I’ve been so consumed with doing a good job, I have difficulty disconnecting my mind from work topics, even when I should be relaxing at home…
I wanted to let you know how much your Pain Body letter helped me, I reread it often and have forwarded it to friends. Are there any other things I can be doing to help myself not worry so much about my husband finding a job?
Feeling gratitude or appreciation can feel hard if you are focused on something you don't want. Hopefully this video can help to show that gratitude can be easier to experience when we no longer demand an object for it at first...
The gratitude hack is to not demand a reason to feel grateful, and instead focus on the unconditional feeling…
Sometimes when I talk with people during one-to-ones, there can be a certain "spiritual conditioning" that ends up suppressing natural creative thoughts or desires. It's good to feel good. There are no downsides when it all comes from within...
The creative mind is an expression of presence.
I hope this video is helpful.
My question is how does one move past from the past? In other words I’m realizing as I get older that there were things about my childhood which have affected me until now and I haven’t addressed them fully within myself. Feelings of having to be perfect and be “successful” and to be independent and not too sensitive etc. I feel guilty putting it into words because I didn’t lack anything growing up and my parents were loving to their best abilities...
A recent one-to-one call with someone prompted me to share this...
If you have any worries in your life, or any questions in your mind that are troubling you, you can shift them into a more positive light.
A great question was asked recently. If you are present, how can you achieve anything in the future? Presence does not mean stopping. It means flowing and being open to a greater intelligence. More here...
Sometimes we can feel powerless. Powerless over life, powerless against other people, even powerless over our own minds that can be causing great distress.
But we all have a hidden power, one that is always there, but often goes unrecognised because it has no form…
I never knew how to be creative.
For me, creativity was not something that I was fully aware of until my early twenties. Before then I have memories of thinking that there were two types of people: creatives and non-creatives. I thought I was non-creative, just good at learning and analysing and understanding, but not able to come up with any fresh ideas.
Someone recently asked how to bring mindfulness into everyday life. Here is my response, hope it helps...
People often think that fear holds us back in a negative way. It is actually how we treat fear that makes it become a hindrance...
Some words on how to deal with criticism, and its often unavoidable nature...
Either you love a challenge, or you don’t.
Either way, this is more of an experiment than a challenge, to see how two simple words can change your day.
Question:
Hi Adam,
I have a small doubt that I need your help with. There is a conflict within me about working on my website. One part inside wants to progress with it. Another part balks at the workload and won't bend the mind to think of it. Since I have been reading your writings and meditating regularly, I have been "spectating this conflict" without taking sides, and without feeling as if these are "my voices" inside "my head"...
Be aware of how much power you have.
So much of what you think is troubling you, is coming from you...
My question is what am I supposed to do when I meet people who are negative or judgmental and evoke negative feelings inside me?...
"We are hindered and kept down in so many ways by believing that our thoughts are a literal representation of our circumstances, people, ourselves and things around us. It is an illusion. I say "banana", and you know what I am talking about, but the word "banana" is not what the thing is. In the same way, your thoughts about your mother or father or brother or sister or friends or foes or work or tasks or schedule or past or future or anything at all, are not what these things really are. It is an illusion. Thought is practical for survival, it is excellent as a creative tool, but to respond to the world with thoughts, and then believe that these thoughts are the things around you, means you can be trapped in a dream that you always thinking is real..."
It is valuable to notice where your thoughts come from. If you notice where they come from, where they originate from, then they will become more creative. Being lost in mental noise can mean our minds become stagnant, repetitive, conditioned. Giving space to the noise and being aware of the source, aids renewed energy and creativity...
"Style is the answer to everything.
A fresh way to approach a dull or dangerous thing.
To do a dull thing with style is preferable to doing a dangerous thing without it..."
Sometimes you have to spend some time, really doing nothing. Not even meditating, or trying to meditate. Not doing anything. It does not even have to be for long. There is so much value in just closing off from the world temporarily to let your mind begin to sort itself out, or rather, to allow the intelligence of stillness to break through into the mind again...
A common question seems to be “If I am present, if I am PRESENCE, then what about progress in life, what about ambition, how do I lead a full life if I am already at peace, not wanting so many things any more?"
My response is this...
Hi Adam,
Love your books and online meditations. They have helped me accept the anxiety or "feeling" as I now call it as its easier to accept that way.
One question I have and I think I already know the answer is. I am in a job I dislike, the job itself is fine but it's a desk job and feels wrong to be sitting at a desk for 7 hours a day. I have tried to accept it but find it difficult. Is the next step to accept the resistance to the job?
“It’s a miserable day, isn’t it?” he said. I looked outside and it was raining. It was not miserable. He was miserable.
“Bloody rain,” he said. How are we gonna go out in this weather?”
We had planned to ride our bikes. The forecast had said it was sunny, and he always trusted the forecasts...
Be careful how easily your mind creates a picture of something, and makes it look daunting. It is only a picture in your head. It is not a real representation of anything. In life you can’t accomplish huge tasks at once, because accomplishing things on any kind of scale, always requires a series of small actions. There are not many “Big” actions. There is just this one, right now...
At a certain point, for some, life can seem to become a kind of relentless, tiresome doing that seems to just go around in a loop every day. A bit like groundhog day, waking up, to get things done...
Whenever you are doing something, you may notice that you seem to be thinking about doing something else, or something that has already been done or said. There is a split in the mind between...
We often are brought up with such a “get” mentality, that life can turn in to one big chore. “Get this, get that, get to the next point in time, get to the next achievement...
Life will always expose you. The whole of Life is your guru. Whatever you are still holding on to, whatever falsity you still carry inside, you can be sure that life will expose it....
Is reluctance to do some activity a signal from my inner being?
I have lots of moments of deep reluctance to do some activity. Take, for example, my blog writing. Or housework. Or exercise. At other times, there seems to be a willingness to do the same things. So I feel it's not the activity per se I am not ready to do. But I can't understand why I have these times of deep reluctance.
